A notorious practical joker, he met an untimely end in 1907. He had invited a number of friends on a hunting trip, and one evening while his guests were relaxing, Jenatzy dressed in a heavy fur coat attempted to frighten them by rattling around their cabin making bear noises. One of the alarmed guests ran out of the cabin and shot him, dead.

In 1955 Stirling Moss, with journalist Denis Jenkinson as navigator, drove a Mercedes-Benz 300-SLR to victory in the Mille Miglia. They had planned the route carefully, mapping every detail on a 19 foot roll of paper which Jenkinson read while they drove. Using hand signals he prepared Moss for each turn and crossing they were to encounter. Traveling at speeds in excess of 170 mph they set a course record 10 mph faster than the old record.

MOSS IN THE MERCEDES-BENZ W196 2002
Bronze on marble and walnut.
Edition of 35, 6x16x8”.
At Aintree in 1955, Stirling Moss led the four Mercedes-Benz W196 Monopostos to first, second, third and fourth place finishes in the British Grand Prix. Moss further enhanced Mercedes-Benz competitive reputation that year by both securing the World Sports Car Championship title and winning the Mille Miglia in 300SLRs. The W196 dominated Grand Prix competition technologically in the mid-fifties, whether in streamlined body or open wheeled road-racing trim. With it Fangio and Mercedes earned two consecutive World Championships in 1954 and 1955. Had Mercedes-Benz continued their racing program it is clear that the W196 had established a firm foundation for continued racing success. This bronze was created and produced exclusively for Mercedes-Benz USA.

ENGLISHTOWN WHEELSTAND MONUMENT 2000
Bronze and Stainless Steel.
Edition to be determined*. 157”x36”x56”.
Completed in December 2000 I installed a 13’ version of my sculpture ENGLISHTOWN WHEELSTAND for the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame, at the Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing, Ocala, Florida. This bronze and stainless steel sculpture of Don Garlits’ Top Fuel Dragster, Swamp Rat XXX at the apex of a dramatic vertical wheel stand rises over two stories tall on its base and is the largest piece I have done to date.
In the 1986 Summer National Drag Races, Englishtown New Jersey, “Big Daddy” Dan Garlits drove the streamlined Swamp Rat XXX into a dramatic vertical wheelstand. Big Daddy walked away from that terrible accident, rebuilt the car and campaigned it for the rest of the season. The Swamp Rat XXX was then retired to the Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC where it sits today. I originally created ENGLISHTOWN WHEELSTAND as a one twelfth scale bronze recreation of that dramatic event.
The enlarged sculpture is scaled to half-life size and is primarily bronze with many polished stainless steel elements. The engine, transmission, fuel tank, cockpit floor, armor shield, wheels and hubs are all stainless. The “God Is Love” cross, one of Garlits’ “trademarks”, is also raised, polished stainless. The polished elements are an eye-catching contrast to the jet-black Top Fuel racer presented at its vertical apex. Much of the dragster had to be fabricated out of bronze tubing and sheet, which is alloy-matched to the cast portion of the sculpture. Because the bronze car is mounted as it is, the open bottom of the dragster provides a full view into the space frame structure that is replicated in bronze at the front of the car. The piece is mounted on a granite monument, which bears the names of all the inductees into the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame.
*Under special arrangement with Don Garlits, the Museum of Drag Racing and the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame a very small number of these monuments will be available to suitable, approved venues.

FINAL FLAG UNFURLED 1999
Bronze and stainless on marble and walnut.
Edition of 21, 20x10x7”.
The driver’s goal: to perform well, hold together mind, body, and machine and cross the finish in a flurry of checkered black and white. In an eloquent study of form and motion the bronze flagman reaches far out of the elevated signal tower to hail the winner with a cascade of polished bronze and stainless-steel checkers.
“The sculpture Final Flag Unfurled was inspired by a composite of many similar scenes. It is the third bronze and stainless steel design that I have done based on the flag bearer waving the checkered flag to mark the winner of a race. Of all the images in auto racing, I think that the checkered flag is the most universally recognized as symbolic of the ultimate goal in racing; to finish and preferably to finish first. The challenge that I tackle in the sculpture is to create a feeling of excitement and motion in the static materials of bronze and stainless. By pulling the square pattern of the flag out into curved arcs of varying length I tried to give the impression of movement. Polishing the stainless steel arcs so that they reflect light enhances the sense of motion. As the viewer moves around the piece the reflections move and change. Also, making the black squares of the checkered pattern actual cut-outs, I hope to create an illusion of the ephemeral motion of the waving flag.” Larry Braun
